"Sorry for the intrusion," Nico mutters flatly as she takes off her shoes in the doorway, knowing full well that even if there was anyone in that labyrinth of a mansion but her and Maki right now, her voice would never be able to reach them. She follows Maki inside with her hands shoved into the pockets of her cardigan, head tilting left and right as she takes in her surroundings like it's her first time seeing them. There are so many pieces of overly-elaborate decor that Nico doesn't think she's ever going to remember them all.

Oh, but she definitely remembers that giant piece of armor on the wall over there. She always gets the feeling like if she gets too close it'll topple over and trap her underneath, so she subconsciously leans towards the opposite wall every time they pass by it.

"Seriously, Maki, no matter how many times I come to your house, it's just way too big," she grumbles, only to catch herself the next moment.

"-- But of course, once Nico's become a super idol, she'll have a mansion like this in every prefecture!" She strikes her signature pose and smile. "Teehee."

Maki's smiling and the more they've moved closer to together, with this sweet moment between them, the more she thinks maybe they just might--

And then Maki's smile drops five notes as Nico adds that last bit. "That was all so sweet until you did that, geez."

"What the hell, you should be happy!"

"I was happy! I like when you're just nice, but then you try too hard and push it and it's annoying."

"That sure is a mouthful from someone who likes me so much she almost started crying after confessing!"

"I can like you and still not like somethings about you."

"Yeah? What do you like about me, then?" She leans away from Maki, folding her arms over her chest demandingly. "Because all I've heard so far was complaints."

"Hey!" Maki has to catch herself a little once Nico's pulled back her counter-weight. She sits back, hands on the bench so her shoulders hitch. She's about to complain, but that might extend their bickering for far longer.

And Nico just asked her to list what she likes about her and Maki can feel even her ears warm.

"I- I like you because..." Maki tries to relax or else she's never going to get through this. Her instinct always is to never let her guard down, and she's trying to this time. "I like how passionate you are. And you're really very smart and resourceful. You care a lot about your friends and family. How nice you can be, when you're not trying so hard." The more Maki talks, the less she looks directly at Nico, until she's looking down at her own knees.

"And... Nico-chan is very cute too."

Nico stands perfectly still as Maki speaks, remaining in the same pose even as the angry tension gradually seeps from it.

By the time she's done talking, Nico's not looking at her either, having found some great interest in the wall to her right. Of course it's all true and it's about time Maki acknowledged it too, but...

She didn't actually expect her to. Much less so willingly and at length.

Nico glances back to her, reassured somewhat by the glaring blush she sees in her cheeks. That means Maki doesn't get to make any smart comments about the way her own face looks, not when Maki's face is way redder.

Way, way redder. This might be the shiest Nico's ever seen her, staring at her knees like that, and yet she still went and said all that anyway. Even though Maki has to push herself to utter the tiniest nugget of unfiltered honesty.

Geez, she must really like her, huh...?

The silence hangs in the air, thick like a fog, until Nico throws out her arm, pointing down at Maki with a victorious laugh: "Ha! I knew it! You do think I'm cute!"

Maki waits nervously in the heavy silence for Nico to say something. Say anything. And whatever she's expecting Nico to say, it's certainly not her laughing and acting like that.

It takes Maki a moment of surprised blinking to react finally. She glares sharply. "You're ridiculous, you know that? That was not cute at all."

"Even if you take that back now, I know you meant it! I'm gonna remember you said that forever." Nico flops back down on the bench, smiling from ear to ear. It's certainly teasing, but... she seems genuinely happy about it, too.

Maki huffs and keeps up her frustrated appearance, but when Nico sits down next to her she opens her eye and looks at her from the corner of it.

"Forever, huh?"

"Yup!" She nuzzles her temple up into Maki's cheek. "So whenever Maki says 'ew, you're gross' or 'that's not cute at all', I'll know what you're really thinking."

The contact is a little strange. She and Nico don't really do physical affection. Only on rare occasion, or if it's with the purpose of annoying the other. But this is nice.

"I'll totally be thinking you're gross and not cute. You're not cute all the time, you know."

"Don't care, there's no backpedaling out of it now!" She sing-songs in an overly loud, childish voice: "Maki thinks I'm cuuu-uute!"

Maki huffs and crosses her arms in front of herself. "This moment was so nice and you had to go and do that."

The self-satisfied smile on Nico's face finally shrinks back down, its place taken by an unexpectedly serious frown. She pulls back a couple inches, just enough to be able to establish proper eye contact again.

"You keep saying I ruined it, but I was being serious, you know," she mutters lowly, sounding actually a little sour. "I want to make Maki smile. Is that bad?"

When Maki feels Nico turn to look at her, she turns as well, and only then realizes just how close they are to each other.

Now Maki feels a little guilty for taking Nico's joking around so lightly. Their faces are so close that Maki's voice comes out soft. "It's not bad... Just, be serious sometimes."

"Or maybe Maki shouldn't be so serious all the time. If you're going to keep that frown as your default expression, you'll get wrinkles on your brow, you know?" She pokes a finger right between Maki's eyebrows. "Right here!"

Maki flinches at Nico's poke, though it's not that harsh. "Well, Nico-chan could stand to be a little more serious when discussing serious matters."

You want something to flinch about? Well, she'll flick your forehead, too. "As your senior, I don't need to be hearing this sort of talk from you!"

Maki really flinches this time and brings up her hand to rub at her forehead. She uses her other hand to flick Nico on the arm. "We agreed in u's that we were all on the same level, Nico-chan."

Nico's shoulder twitches. "That's got nothing to do with it! Have you never heard of respecting your elders?"

This time Maki can't help but laugh to herself. "But it's hard when you still look like a grade schooler."

There's that twitch again, though there was no physical prompt to it this time. Nico's cheeks puff out and deflate. "Then what does it say about you for wanting to make out with a grade schooler?!"

Maki's eyes grow wide and her cheeks, which had almost returned to a normal color, flush instantly again. "Huh-- bu-- I don't-- It's not--" She has no idea how to respond to that.
